We had our first meeting in the Exeter Phoenix Cafe Bar last week and had a really good turn out, for our first time, of 22 (I think!). It was great to meet everyone – there was a real selection of backgrounds, from developers, to biology students, to archaeologists, to video producers.
One of the aims of the evening was to get a feeling for what everyone was interested in and to get ideas and volunteers for our first speakers. The most popular suggestions on our ideas board were:
– Robotics and A.I.
– History of Computing
– Ada Lovelace (and other notable women in technology?)
– Cool techie stuff (natch)
– Women in art
There was also quite a bit of interest around getting more girls and women taking up science and tech subjects and encouraging them into geeky careers, so one of the things we could think about doing in the future is getting our group involved in being ambassadors to schools and colleges.
Rather conveniently, two attendees are experts in the top two on the list, but we are on the look out for other people to speak, so if there’s anyone out there who can come and give a talk on any of the stuff we are interested in (see full list here) or other subjects, please contact us.
I’m aiming for our next meeting (an official launch?) to be around the end of January/beginning of February, this time with food and speakers, venue yet to be decided. One thing that I didn’t get round to on the night was finding out how much people would be happy to pay for an event, inclusive of food, so expect a poll on here, Twitter and Facebook in the next few days…
I think it would also be really good to get some guest posts on here, I will be approaching some people, but again, let us know if you would like to contribute.
Thanks to everyone who came along, I came away feeling really buzzy and enthused by meeting so many interesting and friendly women – hope to see you all in a few weeks!
